The UK government has unveiled major new restrictions on overseas recruitment, blocking more than 100 job roles from being filled by foreign workers as part of efforts to reduce net migration. The Home Office explained that the changes are aimed at reshaping the visa system and giving priority to British workers. The reforms form a key part of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s immigration agenda since he assumed office in July last year.
Supporters of the policy say it will encourage investment in the domestic workforce and reduce long-term dependence on migrant labor. However, critics warn that the move could deepen staff shortages in vital areas such as healthcare, social care, hospitality, agriculture, and logistics—sectors that already rely heavily on overseas workers to keep services running.
Although the full list of restricted occupations has not yet been published, observers note that this marks one of the most significant changes to the UK’s immigration system in recent years. Business leaders and unions have urged the government to strike a balance between managing migration and protecting industries that play a critical role in the economy.
